HomeKit Thermostat: Setup, Automations and Shortcuts
Which HomeKit thermostat brands work with Apple Home, how to add one, and how to automate it with times, arrivals, sensors, scenes and Shortcuts.
Published October 11, 2026
The short answer
A HomeKit thermostat joins Apple Home either natively through HomeKit (ecobee, Honeywell Home T9 and T10 Pro) or through Matter (the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen and other Matter-certified models). Add it in the Home app with the Add button, then control its mode and target temperature, put it in scenes, and run it from automations triggered by the time of day, people arriving or leaving, or a sensor (Apple automations). Automations need a home hub: a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV (Apple home hub).
Which thermostats work with Apple Home?
Thermostats reach the Home app in two ways. HomeKit thermostats pair directly. Matter thermostats speak an open smart home standard that Apple, Google and others support, so one device can show up in several apps at once (Apple Matter).
| Thermostat | Apple Home support | Notes | |---|---|---| | ecobee smart thermostats | HomeKit | ecobee lists scenes, automations and Siri control in Apple Home (ecobee Apple Home) | | Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | Matter | Change temperature or mode from any Matter-certified app; add it by scanning a QR code on the thermostat (Google Nest 2024) | | Honeywell Home T9 and T10 Pro | HomeKit | HomeKit changes setpoints but can't show the room sensor readings (Honeywell Home) | | Other Matter-certified thermostats | Matter | Needs iOS 18 or later to add and control without a hub (Apple Matter) |
Brands change their lineups often, so check the maker's own support page for your exact model before you buy. For older Nest models, look up Google's help pages first.
How to add a thermostat to the Home app
- Install the thermostat, power it on and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad and tap the Add button (+).
- Tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the code on the thermostat or its box, or hold your iPhone near it, then follow the prompts (Apple Matter).
If you already paired a Matter thermostat with another app (Google Home, for example), tap More options on the Add Accessory screen and pick your thermostat from the list (Apple Matter).
iOS versions matter here. With iOS 18 or later, your iPhone can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub. Thread-based accessories work hub-free only on iPhone 15 Pro and later. Apple still recommends a home hub for the best experience (Apple Matter).
What Apple Home lets you control
Open the thermostat's tile in the Home app to reach its controls. HomeKit gives a thermostat four modes: Off, Heat, Cool and Auto (Apple HomeKit docs).
- Mode. Pick Off, Heat, Cool or Auto.
- Target temperature. In Heat or Cool, set one number.
- Heat and cool thresholds. In Auto, a thermostat that supports it holds a range: heating runs below the lower number and cooling runs above the upper one (Apple HomeKit docs).
What you can see depends on the maker. Honeywell says HomeKit can change setpoints on the T9 and T10 Pro but can't view their room sensor readings (Honeywell Home). Keep the maker's app installed for anything the Home app doesn't show.
Adaptive Temperature (iOS 26 and later). With a compatible Matter thermostat, the Home app can manage temperature ranges for At Home, Night, Away and Extended Away. Optional switches let it change modes for you, use occupancy sensors, and predict your arrival from your routines, Maps and Calendar so the house reaches your At Home range before you walk in (Apple Adaptive Temperature). To turn it on: Home tab, tap your thermostat, tap the settings button, then tap Adaptive Temperature.
How to set up HomeKit automations for your thermostat
Automations run on their own once you build them. Each path below starts in the Home app: on the Home tab, tap the Add button (+), then tap Add Automation (Apple automations).
Time of day. Tap A Time of Day Occurs and choose a time and days. Sunrise and sunset shift with the seasons (Apple automations). Use this for a nightly setback or a warm-up before your alarm. For numbers to start with, see the best thermostat settings.
People arrive or leave. Tap People Arrive or People Leave, then choose who, the location and the hours it should work (Apple automations). Everyone this trigger tracks needs Share My Location turned on: Settings, [your name], Find My (Apple scenes).
A sensor detects something. If you've added a sensor to Home, tap A Sensor Detects Something, pick the sensor, tap Next and follow the prompts (Apple automations). A contact sensor on the patio door could switch the thermostat off when the door opens, for example.
An accessory is controlled. Tap An Accessory is Controlled to react when something else changes, like the front door unlocking (Apple automations).
After the trigger, pick the thermostat, set the mode and temperature it should take, and tap Done.
To edit one later, tap Automation (in iOS 18 it appears as a tab at the bottom of the screen), tap the automation, and you can turn it off, change its timing, test it or delete it (Apple automations).
Scenes: one tap for several devices
A scene sets a group of accessories at once. Tap the Add button, then Add Scene, choose Custom, name it and add your accessories, then set each one the way you want it (Apple scenes). A "Bedtime" scene could dim the lights, lock the door and drop the thermostat a few degrees. Run a scene by tapping it, asking Siri, or adding it to an automation.
Can Shortcuts set a HomeKit thermostat to any number?
Apple documents one way to combine the two apps. While you choose accessories for a Home automation, swipe up and tap Convert To Shortcut to add Shortcuts logic to it (Apple automations).
A harder question: can a shortcut work out a number first (from the weather, say) and then set the thermostat to it? Apple's Shortcuts User Guide covers variables in detail but includes no article on the Home actions, and Apple's support pages don't say whether the thermostat's temperature field accepts a variable. So build a two-step test shortcut on your own iPhone before you depend on it, and test again after big iOS updates. Just Right reads and sets Apple Home thermostats directly, and it can also hand its number to a Shortcut.
Why you need a home hub
A home hub lets you control accessories while you're away, share control with others, and run automations (Apple home hub; Apple scenes). A HomePod or HomePod mini becomes a hub automatically when you set it up. An Apple TV becomes one when you add it to a room: Settings, AirPlay and Apple Home, then Room (Apple home hub).
Thread thermostats need a Thread-enabled hub such as an Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router to run automations and work while you're away (Apple automations).
To see which hub your home uses, open the Home app, tap the More button, then Home Settings, then Home Hubs & Bridges (Apple home hub).
The bottom line
- Pick a thermostat that supports HomeKit or Matter, and confirm your exact model on the maker's page.
- Add it with the Add button, then set mode, target temperature, or a heat and cool range in Auto.
- Build automations around your day: time of day, arrivals and departures, and sensors.
- Get a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV to act as a home hub, or your automations won't run.
- Test any Shortcut that passes a calculated temperature before you trust it.

Common questions
Does a Nest thermostat work with Apple HomeKit?
The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is Matter-certified, so Google says you can change its temperature or mode in any Matter-certified app, Apple Home included. You add it by scanning a QR code on the thermostat. Check Google's help pages for older Nest models.
Does ecobee work with Apple Home?
Yes. ecobee says its thermostats work with Apple Home, so you can control them from the Home app and Siri and include them in scenes and automations.
Do I need a home hub for HomeKit thermostat automations?
Yes. Apple says a home hub (HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV) lets you automate accessories and control them while you're away. HomePods become hubs automatically when you set them up.
Can a Shortcut set my thermostat to a temperature it calculated?
Apple's Shortcuts User Guide doesn't document whether the Home app's thermostat action accepts a number from earlier in a shortcut. Build a quick test shortcut on your own iPhone before you rely on it.
Can Apple Home change the thermostat when I leave the house?
Yes. Create an automation with the People Leave trigger, pick the thermostat, and set the temperature or mode you want. Location-based automations also need a home hub.
